In the zone
The Italian owners of Sea Five have eschewed overt bling, instead opting for the discreet refinement preferred by its mostly Europe-based clientele, many of whom return annually as if to their very own beach villa.
But the real luxury is its wonderful location, set just back from Camps Bay’s vibrant sunset strip and palm-lined white sand beach.
“This property is like a beach cottage. It’s just a quick stroll away from the bustle of Camps Bay’s restaurants and bars, but it’s so quiet. And you can get everywhere without needing a car. It’s wonderful to be right in the zone here but not having to compete for parking or sit in traffic,” explains the owner.
Invitation to stay
It’s perfectly fitting that at Sea Five, in a quiet residential street, you have the sense that you’re staying in a well-run and seriously comfortable private home. The sea-facing living/dining/bar area opens onto the sun terrace and swimming pool situated to take in the best simultaneous mountain and sea views. The upper floors of the building have wide verandahs, while the lower level leads out onto a fragrant herb garden.
Choose from seven light and airy suites. They include the two large Ocean Suites with a sea-facing verandah. The two lovely Mountain Suites have verandahs facing the strikingly lovely Twelve Apostles mountain peaks. The Garden Rooms on the ground floor open onto a small patio garden, while on the top floor the large and lovely two-bedroom Penthouse Suite with four wonderful terraces and a Jacuzzi is the pièce de résistance.
“We have loads of repeat guests year after year who use the penthouse like their own Cape Town beach home,” says the owner. “It’s even perfect for families as the second bedroom is ideal for tweens and teens.”
A factor that adds to the home-from-home comfort are all the facilities of a small hotel. There’s a nightly turndown service, and a legendary breakfast spread each morning. The Nespresso stations, televisions, air conditioning, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and well-stocked minibars add discreet ease.
The small, hands-on team assists with queries, dishes out local advice, makes bookings and arranges dinner (either at a local restaurant or by helping you order a delivery from Uber Eats if you want a night at home). From 4pm until midnight, the pool bar is open to make the most of the sundowner atmosphere.

“When we decided to renovate, we chose to team up with interior decorator Francois du Plessis as he was able to create the right atmosphere – something between Mediterranean villa and beach cottage in Churchhaven. Simple but elegant, with local art and design touches that subtly ground you in Africa. Natural textures and textiles including cotton, linen, cane furniture and sisal rugs are key.”
