Where the farms of Bredasdorp merge with the coast, Inhoek is deeply Overberg in its very bones!
Just 2½ hours from Cape Town and mere minutes from Arniston, this beautiful farm stands at the meeting of sea breeze and pastoral calm. “It’s intrinsically Overberg. The smell and space and history of it; being able to look out and see the Bredasdorp mountains, the sunshine tempered by cooling sea breezes,” says the owner. “You really feel the world is your oyster here.”
The sea can be heard crashing against the shore a mere four kilometres from the farm. It brings in cool air to lift the smouldering summer heatwaves and sometimes a fresh morning mist that coats the earth – making the farm unusually temperate for the Overberg.
Inhoek has deep roots reaching back four generations. “These farms are like hen’s teeth – they don’t come up for sale as they’re heritage farms,” explains the owner.
It’s the very last working farm before the coast, which gives it a rare kind of authenticity and gravitas. The farmland runs with life – wheat, barley, oats, sheep, cattle. Expect to be greeted by one of the five resident donkeys that graze the fields, while the small herd of Nguni cows add an unmistakably African aesthetic to the peaceful Overberg scenery around the homestead and farm yard.
There are two large farm dams to cool off in and to supply the water troughs for the livestock. Theewaterskloof Dam supplies municipal water to the farmhouse and cottages, and 10 000-litre water tanks are installed at each building on the farm to catch precious rainwater. The arable land (about 400 hectares) is rented out to a neighbouring farmer, which is a reliable income to cover monthly expenses.
“It’s a lovely situation, four kilometres from Arniston – on a still day I can hear the sea. It’s got all the ley lines running through it, so Inhoek has a wonderful energy. The Overberg is an acquired taste but it’s extraordinarily beautiful; it gets under your skin and feeds your soul. There are certain times of the day – when you can hear the birds and the sea – that you honestly don’t want to be anywhere else on the planet.”
The fynbos around the homestead blooms with endemic white and pink proteas, restios, red aloes and a glorious array of flora with happy bokkies, rabbits and all sorts of species of insects and birds, especially the pretty sunbirds. Pure joy for twitchers and hikers, who love the designated walking paths through the farm terrain.
Complementing the agricultural arm of this sowing and stock farm is the lifestyle side. Inhoek is at once elegant and earthy, a place where guest farm meets heritage holding. It has also earned a stellar reputation as a venue for weddings, retreats and corporate breakaways.
Guests return year after year to make the family home their own as a holiday hideaway that’s the very best combination of rural idyll and beach bliss. The farm accommodates up to 22 people: 12 in the main house; two farm cottages sleep four each, while a third cottage sleeps two people. The glorious beaches of Arniston are no more than a five-minute drive away. When the midday sun gets too hot and the beaches too full in the height of summer, head home to the cool tranquillity of the farm!
The farmhouse itself is an expansive, light-filled family home. The large, open-plan sitting room and dining room look out onto views of the farm and distant Bredasdorp mountains through large sliding doors and windows on all sides. A four-metre deep wraparound stoep encircles the entire house, cleverly designed with a pizza oven and a braai area on both sides of the house so there’s always a wind-protected outside entertainment area to choose from
“We hold weddings and events in The Venue, which accommodates up to 150 people. French doors open out to the endless fields, every angle framed by pastoral beauty. Then there’s the Wine Barn, which seats 40. It’s a beautifully rustic space, with its own catering kitchen, built around old cattle troughs. It becomes the heart of laughter and connection. Here we enjoy wine tastings, cooking lessons, harvest-table dinners and even conference breakfasts. The Italian trattoria seasonal pop-up with its delicious fresh fare draws locals and holidaymakers to from nearby Arniston and Bredasdorp.” In short, we think Inhoek is the most desirable lifestyle farm for sale in the Overberg.
There’s a particular timelessness to Inhoek, a feeling that memory and land are stitched together. It’s not just a lifestyle farm for sale in the Overberg – it’s a story. When the sun dips, the sunsets blow your mind, the light changing in subtle pulses. There’s no doubt that this beautiful farm gets under your skin, the landscape giving you a profound sense of place.
“I wake up early in the morning – you can’t get better than dawn and dusk; sunrise and sunset,” says the owner. “My favourite thing is to pop down to Arniston for a quick swim in the sea before I tackle the day.”
The early hours are painted in soft pinks and golds, the house perched so that wherever you gaze, you absorb the intense blues of sky, greens of fields, and seasonal bursts of bright colour from aloes and wild fynbos. “In May, the land bursts into colour: proteas, fynbos, aloes bloom – a vibrant explosion red and pinks. In other months, the skies are the bluest you have ever seen. In the hot summer months, the fields take on the golden hues of toasted wheat.”
There are corners of Inhoek that seem carved out for very particular kinds of joy. Evening, when it’s still, a fire crackles, braai coals glow and the sky deepens. Mornings in winter bring mist rolling over lawns, and thousands of guinea fowl graze and call, dancing through the grass in a way only nature can choreograph. From inside the house, you look out to the Soetmuisberg: a vista that at once grounds you and humbles you.
Birdsong, gentle breezes, the distant shush of the sea – that’s your soundtrack. Days flow gently: tending vegetables and herbs, lighting up the pizza oven, braaiing under the wide sky, or just sitting on the broad wrap-around stoep, letting the peace settle in. “To sit at Inhoek is utterly restorative,” finds the owner. “It’s a place of rest and relaxation and space.” But even in stillness, there’s a rich energy – the land hums quietly, as if alive.
Inhoek is more than a property – it’s a way of living, a legacy, a promise. If you seek a Bredasdorp farm for sale or an agricultural farm near the beach that truly drips with place and possibility, Inhoek is one of the most special invitations: to root yourself deeply, and to carry on a tradition of land, life and beauty. Here you feel the full pulse of the Overberg, the slow breathing of a working farm and the gentle hum of sanctuary.
