Where history lives beautifully

The current restoration plays cleverly with the transition between intimate rooms and larger spaces, but never at the expense of the building itself. The old bones remain very much in charge.

Despite its grandeur and heritage credentials, Ballotina is not a house that demands formality. Ballotina’s history gives the beauty of the house another dimension. In 1945, historian, academic and museumologist Mary Cook – an authority on Cape Dutch architecture – bought the property specifically to preserve an example of Thibault’s work.
That decision proved particularly significant after the devastating Tulbagh earthquake of 1969, which measured 6.5 in magnitude. Ballotina was extensively damaged and condemned for demolition, but Cook fought to save and restore it. The house standing here today is, quite literally, a survivor – protected because someone recognised what would be lost if it disappeared.
For the next custodian, that history comes with a rather lovely opportunity: to live in and enjoy the house, not simply admire it.
Tulbagh days
