Autumn mists, vineyard colours and mountain magic
“My favourite time of year here is autumn, with the spectacular colours in the vineyards … and you see the mist coming in all dewy over False Bay and then slowly receding as the sun heats up, and then the mountain just opens up. It’s a kind of magic!”
All year round, there’s a wonderful awareness of the seasons as the cycles on the surrounding farm ebb and flow. “We love the little entrance leading down into Groot Constantia. Every morning we walk our dogs there for miles through the vineyards or the little footpaths winding around the farm.” Ou Wingerd Estate even has its own vineyard of dry-farmed Chardonnay grapes – maintained by High Constantia winemaker David van Niekerk in exchange for the annual harvest, which he uses for his delicious MCC.
“Our lifestyle is very outdoorsy – it’s real Constantia living, and when we feel like a change from walking or cycling on Groot Constantia, we go up just one road and walk all the way up to Constantia Nek. In the mornings we stroll to Foxcroft for our coffee, and Constantia Village and Cape Town’s super restaurants are just a hop and a skip away.”
Ou Wingerd Estate consists of just three unique sectional-title erven, one with a light and airy Cape Dutch-style cottage and two large plots that are blank slates on which you can build your dream home, whether your style is rural charm or streamlined and modern. There is even a full set of approved plans for a sleek contemporary home included in the sale for one of the sites.
Light-filled interiors, trussed ceilings and roaring fires
Ou Wingerd Cottage is a charming Cape Dutch-style home on which you can put your own stamp. “It’s perfect for someone to lock-up-and-go and the property is a manageable size, but it feels very expansive,” explains the owner. “It’s an ideal blank canvas: you could keep it the way it is or easily take it in an organic modern direction.”
“Our family spends daily life together in the kitchen/dining area. It’s got a high ceiling with open trusses, wooden beams and thatch, keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter. We throw open the big glass double barn doors and all sit and work at the kitchen/dining table, watching the peacocks and peahens – and their five chicks – ambling about. Porcupines come through the garden at night, and the birdlife – owls, falcons and whatnot – is enchanting. In winter the lounge is flooded with lovely sunlight, and the blazing fireplace makes it so cosy.”
Isn’t it time you started your own family legacy on this rare rural estate in the heart of Constantia’s farmlands?
