“Endless views meet refined beach living”

The water is a turquoise marvel at Mericove House in Romansbaai Beach and Fynbos Estate, where your closest neighbours may just be the zebra, bontebok and eland that roam the fynbos. The vistas stretch over Walker Bay to Hermanus, and the only thing likely to disturb you on this virtually private beach is the breaching of southern right whales in breeding season.

Serene beach reserve

Romansbaai is a blissful beach oasis: its north-facing orientation on the leeward side of Danger Point peninsula near Gansbaai means it is unusually sheltered, even when the prevailing southeaster wind is blitzing elsewhere. (It has the exact same magical orientation as Clifton, which Capetonians know is the spot to head to for a perfectly still beach day when the wind is blowing.)

“I discovered this property for sale in Romansbaai by chance when I had a work meeting here,” says the owner. “I knew I’d found the most beautiful place in the world, told my wife and went straight back the next day, and then back again on the weekend with my kids. It was a gift!”

“Living here has a beautiful island feel. Romansbaai is on a peninsula so you have water nearly all around you. It’s unbelievably private and secure. The thriving marine life is astonishing. There’s nothing better than a lunch of mussels freshly picked off the rocks or making fresh sashimi when one of our neighbours shares his catch of the day with us.”

“But the very best thing about life here is the vibrant Romansbaai community. We share so much common ground – and braais on the beach and wine and lunch clubs. The lifestyle here is superb, so it’s not surprising that many of our neighbours are internationals.”

“We chose to build on this stand because it’s one of a kind. It’s right on the path leading directly to the beach, and has uninterrupted views across the bay. The home faces north/northwest, so in summer our pool and entertainment areas are sheltered and the sunsets are spectacular.”

Barefoot beach living

You feel on holiday the minute you walk into Mericove House. The home is a refined interpretation of island-style living, and makes the most of its sea, fynbos and mountain views. As you enter the front door, your gaze is drawn immediately to the ocean beyond, passing right over the serene sunken lounge (one of three living areas that invite you to unwind and chill out).

Private courtyards and patios off each of the four bedrooms invite barefoot luxury living. Natural textures and muted tones prevail, with handcrafted poplar-wood rafters complementing the relaxed, beachy feel. The business end of the kitchen is tucked away behind the scenes – perfect when you’re relaxing with friends.

“The stoep is enclosed and we spend 90% of our social life gathered here around the fireplace. It’s become our dining room now. It’s an intimate space and just the most beautiful place to socialise,” the owner says. “But it’s also where you’ll find me working during the day – so I can glance up and soak up all this beauty!”

You reach the pristine 3km-long sandy beach at Romansbaai directly via the beach path in front of the house. Large rock pools rich with sea life at each side of the beach entice young and old to explore them, and the clear Grecian waters are shallow and welcoming.

“We make the most of life here, starting every day with a long walk along the paths that wind through the fynbos – keeping an eye out for the eland calf that was born recently – for a swim at the beach. In the winter whale season, we love seeing these incredible creatures up close as they migrate back to the calving grounds in Walker Bay.”

So, if you’re looking for your dream beach house for sale in South Africa, look no further than Romansbaai!
